This Fall, 2013, CAS rescued 200 leghorn hens from a California egg laying facility that was discarding them due to decreased egg production. These girls had never seen the sun or walked on a blade of grass. They lived in cramped cages and had been debeaked. They were shy, underweight, and their feathers were sparse. Today, they enjoy strutting and scratching in their yard during the day and bedding down in their roomy aviary barn at night time. They have reached a healthy weight and their feathers are growing in nicely. Each one has her own unique personality and is very friendly! They have received a new lease on life and are grateful for it. Though they are happy in their new setting here at CAS each of these wonderful birds deserves a forever home and a rich, life full of human compassion.
